High definition television – HDTV – is the latest technology in television broadcasting, a revolution in home viewing, as significant as the transition from videos to DVD. There are two technologies to choose from

  • LCD
  • Plasma

HDTV is a new standard that combines high-resolution pictures with Dolby digital surround sound to produce the ultimate TV experience. High definition means fantastic picture quality (up to five times more information can be transmitted than standard digital TV), with vibrant colours and stunningly crisp images.

The selling point of HDTVs is their amazing picture quality. One of the reasons this is possible is the resolutions they can display in, allowing sharper and more detailed images. HDTVs can display in two different resolutions – 1280 pixels x 720 pixels and 1920 pixels by 1080 pixels but you will mostly see these referred to as 720p, 1080i and 1080p.
